In 1973, Papua New Guinea became self-governing, before becoming a fully independent country on 16 September 1975. STAMP HISTORY From 1949 to 1952, Australian stamps continued to be used.  In 1952, the first stamps inscribed "Papua and New Guinea" were released.  In 1972, the stamp inscription was changed to "Papua New Guinea".
